Cricket Australia has appointed Eugenie Buckley as Tournament Director of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2009 to be hosted by Cricket New South Wales. Eugenie starts on 7 January 2008 and will initially be based at the Cricket Australia Melbourne office for the planning phase of the tournament.

A qualified lawyer, Eugenie has just completed a six-month contract with the ICC where she assisted in finalising the ESS media rights deal and commercial program as well as the staging of the World Twenty20 in South Africa.

Prior to cricket, she worked in soccer for FFA and was closely involved in the establishment of the A-League and Australia’s participation in the FIFA World Cup in Germany 2006. Buckley has also worked in rugby union, including as the Head of Legal and Commercial when the ARU staged the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

“I’m very excited to take on this new role and I’m really looking forward to the challenges of putting together a successful ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup,” she said.

“Working previously with the ICC, FFA, FIFA and the ARU, I’ll draw on my experience from working with those organisations which should help in our efforts in helping to develop women’s cricket in Australia.

“We really want to showcase a fantastic tournament comprising the best female cricketers from around the world and leave a legacy to continue to develop and improve the game for women, not just in Australia, but also internationally.

“We want to present a tournament which will allow the players to play in the best possible environment.”

Buckley will establish a Tournament Organising Committee which is proposed will comprise a representative from each Cricket Australia department to ensure the success of the Tournament.

“We will initially assemble a really good working team and work very closely with the host state, New South Wales, to make sure we deliver a very successful tournament,” Buckley said.

Sri Lanka Women defeated Pakistan by six wickets in the final of the Women’s Tri-Nation Cricket series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on Tuesday. Chamari Polgampola and Shashikala Siriwardene led the bowling attack taking three wickets each to bowl out Pakistan to 123 all out in 47.1 overs.

Choosing to field first, Sri Lanka tightened the screws early on when right arm medium pacer Polgampola dismissed the openers cheaply in successive balls in the third over leaving Pakistan stunned at 14-2. The fall of wickets continued at regular intervals and only Javeria Khan put on some opposition with her 23 in 32 balls to bring the total score to 123 all out. Polgampola finished with figures of 3-16 and was ably supported by off-break spinner Siriwardene (3-24).

In reply, the Sri Lankan chase did not prove to be much difficult as the batters opened briskly. However, a brief scare followed in the Sri Lankan ranks when Pakistan skipper Urooj Mumtaj picked up two wickets in the space of three balls in the 26th over. Hiruka Fernando then posted an unbeaten 44 runs that saw the side home with more than 14 overs to spare.

Chamari Polgampola was named both Player of the Match as well as Player of the Series for her outstanding performance. The victory comes as a major confidence booster to the Sri Lankan team ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia beginning on 7 March 2009.

The 25-match ICC Women's Cricket World Cup will be played at six venues in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Bowral from 7-22 March 2009. Australia and India are the tournament’s top two seeds, with New Zealand and England viewed as the other two main chances for the title.

As the tournament’s top-ranked team, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have been placed in Group A along with New Zealand, West Indies and South Africa. Group B contains India, England, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will open their World Cup defence with a Trans Tasman clash against New Zealand on 8 March at North Sydney Oval before completing their Group A commitments with matches against South Africa and West Indies in Newcastle and Drummoyne.

Providing they make it through their Group matches to the Super Sixes stage, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will play three more matches before the final and playoff matches.

“Hosting the World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for Cricket Australia and Cricket New South Wales and we can’t wait to welcome the world’s cricket community to Australia next March,” Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland, said.

“With the generous support provided by the NSW Government, the 2009 ICC Women’s World Cup will set a new benchmark for the promotion and staging of women’s cricket.
